President Pratibha Devi Singh Patil has been focusing on environment conservation at Rastrapathi Nilayam at Bollaram on the out skirts of Hyderabad. Several green initiatives including percolation tanks, drip irrigation systems for horticulture gardens and solar lights have been set up in the last one year in the premises. A Public Works Department official told All India Radio that these initiatives are aimed at making Rastrapathi Nilayam an eco-friendly habitat on the lines of Rstapathi Bhavan in Delhi which has achieved zero percent waste.AIR correspondent M.S. Lakshmi reports that the Rastrapathi Nilayam at Bollaram on the out skirts of Hyderabad is on a sprawling 90 acres area but most of it was stony barren land and filled with forest like plant growth. But this was one year back. Now, the 150 year-old Rastrapathi Nilayam is being transformed into a beautiful habitat that conserves environment in every possible aspect. Several green initiatives have been brought to practice with President Prathibha Devisingh Patil focusing on conserving practices on the lines of Rastrapathi Bhavan in Delhi that got ISO 140001 certification in last July for achieving zero percent waste. Similarly, Energy conserving practices have been focused at Rastrapathi Nilayam. A CPWD official said the ground water levels in the surroundings have been significantly increased in the last one year following digging of three Rain harvesting pits and a percolation tank in addition to three dug wells. The local stones from the premises were used for construction. Unlike earlier, every drop of rain water is now being preserved and productively used through drip irrigation for about 35 acre fruit and herbal gardens. Solar light panels have been set up through out the Nilayam. And, developing a spiritual garden is also on the plans. All this is being developed with out changing the 150 year old single storied original building at Rastarpathi Nilayam. By focusing on energy conserving methods at Ratsapathi Nilayam, President Pratibha Patil has set an example for the people to make these practices a part of their lives.
