Prez favours removal of impediments for greater participation of people in democratic exercise

The President Mrs. Pratibha Devi Singh Patil has strongly advocated for the removal of impediments for greater participation of people in the democratic exercise.Addressing the inaugural function of the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the Election Commission Mrs Patil while hailing the role of the panel, called for modernisation and computerisation of electoral process to make it more transparent.She urged the political parties and the participants in the election process to follow the model code of conduct to cleanse the electoral process.Tracing the role of the commission in stabilising the democratic process in India, Mrs. Patil said that it is high time that the institution emerges as a role model for the conduct of polls.She said that the impartiality and credibility of the election commission has already been hailed and it goes to the credit of the Commission to organise one of the democratic exercise in the world in a fair and transparent manner.Speaking on the occasion the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh said that Commission played a great role in strengthening the democracy in India. He asserted that it is due to the efforts of the Commission that the purity of the Election process could be maintained. The President Mrs. Patil released a commemorative stamp on the occasion and the Vice President Mohd Hamid Ansari released a Book titled "Reinforcing Indian Democracy in Lok Sabha Elections-2009".The Speaker Mrs. Meira Kumar, UPA Chairperson Mrs. Sonia Gandhi and the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Mrs. Sushma Swaraj were also present on the occasion. Earlier, the Chief Election Commissioner Mr. Navin Chawla identified the challenges of the Commission and the objectives of organising the yearlong Diamond Jubilee Celebrations.Several envoys of foreign countries, representatives of different countries and Electoral Bodies were present at the inaugural function.
