Pressure mounts on Yeddyurappa to quit

Amid mounting opposition pressure on Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa to quit following the controversy on allocation of prime urban land to his family members, the BJP leader's son and daughter have surrendered their plots in the city.According to sources B Y Raghavendra, MP, submitted a letter to the Bangalore Development Authority surrendering 50 X 80 feet plot allotted to him in the upscale R M V Extension. The Chief Minister's daughter, Umadevi, sought cancellation of two acres of industrial land allotted to her near Harohalli by the Karnataka Industrial Development Board. Two relatives of Yeddyurappa, who had been allotted sites by BDA, also surrendered them. The move comes a day after the state cabinet ordered a judicial probe into allotment of land in the last ten years. Meanwhile, the Opposition has welcomed the probe but insisted upon resignation of Yeddyurappa. Former Prime Minister Deve Gowda whose tenure as Chief Minister is also included in the forthcoming probe, sought the resignation of Yeddyurappa for distributing Government land to his family members at below market rate, after overlooking existing norms. The State Congress Party President G Parameshwar has termed the land scam in the state as shameful and unprecedented. Criticising the Chief Minister for indulging in wide spread land scam, he said nothing less than Yeddyurappa’s resignation is acceptable to them. The State Party President Eeswarappa and Chief Minister Yeddyurappa are likely to participate in the Core Committee meeting to be held in New Delhi this evening.Acquisition of prime land and its denotification later with the intention of distributing them to the near and dear once at cheap rate has put Yeddyurappa in trouble in Karnataka. The Opposition is cornering the Government on land deals and seeking the resignation of the Chief Minister. The question is also raised in the Parliament. Such being the case, the Yeddyurappa Government which is constantly facing threats from within the party is indeed left in the lurch now due to allotment of prime land to close family members. The issue of leadership change that is lurking over the BJP State party in Karnataka will probably be decided in the core committee meeting to be held today night in New-Delhi.
