The President's estate in the Rashtrapati Bhawan has become the first urban habitat in the country to receive the ISO certification mark for maintaining environmental management systems. The ISO 14001:2004 certification was received by Dr Christy Fernandez, Secretary to the President from the Bureau Veritas India, at a function in the Rashtrapati Bhawan today. Speaking on the occasion, the President, Mrs Pratibha Devisingh Patil, said the Roshini initiative started in 2008, could be a model for the country. She asked the government to create awareness among the people. The President said changing people's mindsets and attitudes was the key to bringing perceptible and sustainable change in their habitats. She lauded the efforts of the officers, staff and residents of the President's estate in working together and providing their contribution in making the roshini programme a success. Union Ministers Mr S Jaipal Reddy, Mrs Krishna Tirath, Kumari Selja and the Delhi Chief Minister, Mrs Sheila Dikshit, who were present on the occasion, also congratulated the President for completing her three years in office today. AIR Correspondent reports that the ISO certification means the International Organisation for Standards for environmental management systems are now in place in the 340-acre President's estate. The residents of the President's Estate have achieved the goals of managing the systems through Roshini, aimed at building sustainable habitats. The components of the Roshini initiative include installation of solar power, rain water harvesting, waste management, environmental protection and pollution control and ban on the use of plastic bags etc.
