Presidential candidate of NDF Premadasa says he will appoint new PM if elected

In Sri Lanka, Presidential candidate of New Democratic Front, NDF's Sajith Premadasa says once he is elected President, a new Prime Minister would be appointed who commands the majority in Parliament.
''
''In a statement today, he also promised not to appoint Ministers who were tainted with corruption. He vowed to bring an end to what he called power-hungry political culture in Sri Lanka. His statement assumes significance as Prime Minister Ranil Wickremsinghe said last week that he would remain in his post if Premadasa is elected the President.
''Wickremsinghe is the leader of the United National Party (UNP), the main constituent of NDF whereas Premadasa is the deputy leader. The latest move is being seen as Premadasa's attempt to distance himself from the legacy of the current government because of its relative unpopularity and a bond scam.
''
''Earlier, Tamil National Alliance (TNA) had announced their support for Premadasa for the elections scheduled for next Saturday.
''
''Thirty-five candidates are in the fray for Presidential elections, but the main contest is between Sajith Premadasa and former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
