The President, Mrs Pratibha Devisingh Patil has called upon the international legal community to forge a consensus on anti-terror laws. She said that it is incumbent upon the international community to ensure that an effective legal framework for the prevention of terrorism is put in place to bring to justice the sponsors , abettors and perpetrators of terror. Inaugurating a two day conference of the Internatioal Conference of Jurists on International Terrorism and Rule of Law, in New Delhi yesterday she said that India has pledged a policy of zero tolerance towards terrorism from whatever source it originated.Without making reference to any country, Mrs Patil also said that the countries must own up responsibilities and not deflect the responsibility to non state actors. She said that no idea and cause whatsoever can justify terrorism. Calling for a global response to the menace ,the President said that if there is a threat against one it should be treated as a threat against all in the world . She also expressed concern over the increasing activities of funding to terrorist activities, money laundering and growing nexus between narcotics, drug trafficking. She underlined the need for strengthening the relevant laws to check it. Addressing the Conference the Law Minister Dr Veerappa Moily said that in spite of being a victim of major terrorist attacks ,India still continues to be a torchbearer for peace, development and inclusive growth. The Chief Justice India , Justice K G Balakrishnan called for more judicious coverage by media saying that "Pervasive" media coverage of terror attacks could provoke a disproportionate level of anger and irrational desire for retribution.
