President to inaugurate International Mathematicians Congress to evening

President Pratibha Devisingh Patil will be arriving in Hyderabad this evening. She will be inaugurating the International Mathematicians Congress being held in Hyderabad from 19th to 27th of this month. The Congress is being organised in India for the first time in more than 100 years of its history. The International Mathematical Union in collaboration with the University of Hyderabad is organizing the Congress. Over 3000 delegates from all over the world are taking part in the 9-day long deliberations in which over 170 papers are being presented. More than 20 areas of mathematics including logic and foundations, algebra, number theory, functional analysis and applications and mathematics education and popularization of mathematics. Several prestigious international Mathematical Awards like the Fields Medals, the Nevanlinna Prize and the Gauss Prize will be presented on the occasion. International Congress of Women Mathematicians is also being held on the side lines of the Congress. Holding the biggest Mathematical event of the world in India is seen as global recognition to India as a player in the mathematics.
