President stresses need for setting up internal audit mechanism in various government and PSEs

President Pranab Mukherjee has stressed the need for setting up internal audit mechanism in various government departments and public sector enterprises. He said, it will go a long way as an effective tool and work as complimenting the role of Comptroller and Auditor General, CAG.

Inaugurating the 26th Conference of Accountants General in New Delhi today, Mr. Mukherjee said, the CAG's role has become more important and dynamic than ever in the past due to increasing aspiration and demand for better services from the government.

He said, the capacity building and up gradation of skills are the continuous process and CAG has also enhanced its skill. He said that good performance of resources is necessary but it is more essential to use these resources judiciously.

The President expressed the hope that the watchdog will redefine its role in the present scenario and ensure check and balances for an effective and transparent governance.

On this occasion, CAG Mr. Vinod Rai said that all institutions today, including CAG, are in the public eye, so it is imperative to make them more responsive to these changes. He said, the phenomenal expansion of media and the right to information available to the people, demand a new accountability paradigm in the country.
