Sri Lanka President Maithripala Sirisena has called for an early solution to fisherman problems with India. During his meeting with Minister of State for External Affairs M.J. Akbar at the UN Headquarters in New York, the Sri Lankan President said the two Governments look at it as a humanitarian issue and whenever fishermen are arrested for illegal border crossing, the respective governments release them as early as possible. <br/><br/>According to a statement from President's office in Colombo today, Mr. Sirisena also expressed concern about the long term damage caused to the environment and the sea. He was referring to the impact of bottom trawling which reportedly causes harm to marine ecosystem. Mr. Sirisena urged the Indian side for an early solution to the issue. His comments came as a high-level delegation led by Sri Lankan Minister for fisheries is scheduled to visit New Delhi in coming weeks to discuss the issue.
