Presidential assent has been refused to a Delhi government bill seeking to exclude the post of Parliamentary Secretary from the office of profit. The refusal puts a question mark over the membership of 21 Aam Aadmi Party MLAs, who have been appointed Parliamentary Secretaries by the Arvind Kejriwal government. In June last year, Delhi Assembly had passed the bill to give exemption to parliamentary secretaries to hold dual office.

Petitions have been filed with the President Pranab Mukherjee seeking disqualification of the these MLAs on the ground that they occupied office of profit in violation of Constitution. The Bill had been forwarded by Lt Governor Najeeb Jung to the Centre, which in turn was sent to the President with its comments.

Reacting to it, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal accused the Centre of creating hurdles in the functioning of Delhi government. In a series of tweets, he said, that his government is not paying any money to these MLAs, appointed as Parliamentary Secretaries. He said, they are also not availing any facilities as Parliamentary Secretaries.
