President Pranab Mukherjee opens research center at Sabarmati Ashram

President Pranab Mukherjee has inaugurated the archival and research center at Sabarmati Gandhi Ashram in Ahmedabad this morning. The centre has taken up mammoth task to transcribe and publish over 8,500 letters received by Mahatma Gandhi. The President has also viewed the archival materials including letters and artifacts related to Mahatma Gandhi and a special presentation on digital archive. He also place cotton hank around the portrait of Mahatma Gandhi and signed visitors' book of Sabarmati Ashram. President also visited Hriday Kunj and plated a tamarind tree in Sabarmati Ashram.<br/><br/>The Collected Works of Mahatma Gandhi has documented more than 31,000 available letters written by Mahatma Gandhi during his lifetime, but the letters received by him which solicited his response have not been documented so far. In an effort to provide greater insight into Mahatma Gandhi's exchange of views with the great leaders of his time, Sabarmati Ashram has taken up this project. President will also address the 62nd convocation ceremony of Gujarat Vidhyapeeth at Ahmedabad today. More than 7 thousand students of Gandhian education will be given degrees, diploma and medals on this occasion. President will inaugurate Beach Festival at Diu late this evening and also visit famous Somnath Temple and Dwarikadheesh Temple before his return to New Delhi tomorrow.
