President Patil stress need to promote studies of mathematics among young generation

President Pratibha Devisingh Patil has stressed the need to promote studies of mathematics among the young generation. She has formally inaugurated the International Congress of Mathematicians in Hyderabad on Thursday morning. Addressing over 3000 mathematicians from all over the world, the President has said no technology would be produced without a high level of mathematical precision in future. Stating that Mathematics stands at the helm of all sciences, she said it has a major role in development of Computer science and Information Technology. The President has said influence of mathematics in the fields of social sciences is also growing enormously. Adding that the aesthetic component of mathematics would inculcate the habit of rational thought and scientific temper, she recalled the contributions made to the advancements of mathematics by eminent Indians since ages. The president has conferred the prestigious Fields Medals to Elon Lindenstrauss from Israel, Cerdic Villani and Ngo Bao Chaue of France and Stansislav Smirnov of Switzerland for their outstanding contribution to the field of Mathematics. While the USA mathematician Daniel Spielman has been conferred the prestigious Nevanlinna Prize, Chern Medal has been presented to Louis Nirenbery for his life time contribution. Among the others, International Mathematical Union President Prof Lovasz, Andhra Pradesh Governor ESL Narasimhan, Chief Minister K Rosaiah was also present. More than 20 areas of mathematics including logic and foundations, algebra, number theory, functional analysis and applications and mathematics education and popularization of mathematics will be deliberated upon during the next 9 days.
