President Pranab Mukherjee has called upon National Institute of Technology, NITs to take the lead in creating capacity for innovation and entrepreneurship. Addressing the Thirteenth Convocation Ceremony of Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology in Nagpur today, Mr Mukherjee said the NITs must align their activities with national development goals. <br/><br/>The President said technologists are problem solvers who search for quicker, better and less expensive ways of meeting tough challenges. Mr Mukherjee asked the students to take a pledge to make full use of technology for the benefit of mankind and to see that the use of technology spreads happiness, prosperity and general well-being amongst the people of our country. <br/><br/>Mentioning the 'Start-up India and Stand-up India' initiative of the Union Government, Mr. Mukherjee said that the success of this initiative would largely depend upon the efficacy and degree of innovation in use of technology as well as quality of available human resources in the country and asked them tobe entrepreneurs rather than the job seekers.<br/><br/>Quoting the legendary educationist and former President Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, Mr. Pranab Mukherjee said that education in general and technical education in particular has always been seen as an instrument of transformation for economic, social and political development of the country. Therefore, there is a need to utilize the power of education, the strength of science and technology effectively in the right direction to bring positive transformation in society. <br/> <br/><br/>The President further informed that in the QS World University Rankings of 2015-16 released today, two Indian institutes have secured place for the first time in top 200 of the world. Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi is ranked at no. are the two institutes which are closely followed by the IIT-Bombay which is ranked at no. 202. He congratulated and said it is a proud moment for Indian academic community and the institutes of higher learning.<br/><br/>Maharashtra Governor Chennamaneni Vidyasagar Rao, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Union Minister for Road Transport, Highways and Shipping Nitin Gadkari were also present on this occasion.<br/><br/>Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis appealed the students to take benefit of the demographic dividend of having the youngest skilled workforce to set up factory of globe and the manufacturing hub for the whole world.<br/><br/>Union Minister for Road Transport, Highways and Shipping Nitin Gadkari stressed the need to pursue innovations in the field of science and technology and asked them to strive hard for conversion of knowledge into wealth and thereby bring in prosperity.<br/><br/>During the Thirteenth Convocation Ceremony 1,140 students were awarded degrees including 48 PhD, 343 Post-Graduate and 729 Graduate degrees. The distinguished and meritorious students were awarded forty medals and 56 prizes for their achievements. Prem Auti of Mechanical Engineering branch, who secured highest credit points amongst all the graduates, received Sir Visvesvaraya Gold Medal at this juncture.
