President Kovind says Country's food consumption likely to go up to one trillion dollars by 2025

President Ram Nath Kovind has said India's food value chain offers huge opportunities for both domestic and foreign investors. Addressing the valedictory session of World Food India event in New Delhi today Mr Kovind said, country's food consumption is likely to go up from 370 Billion dollars at present to one trillion dollars by 2025. <br/><br/>He said, there are huge opportunities in areas such as post-harvest facilities, logistics, cold chains and manufacturing. President said this sector has a huge business appetite with large potential to generate employment for both women and the large young population of the country. <br/><br/>Expressing concern on food wastage, Mr Kovind said, focus on food processing will not only reduce the unacceptable level of food wastage but also help doubling farmers' income. He also said, both investment, as well as technological solutions, are required to reduce food wastage.<br/><br/>Speaking on the occasion, Minister of Food Processing Industries Harsimrat Kaur Badal said 50 MoUs worth 11.25 billion dollar were signed during the three day event. She said India will become global food factory when it controls food wastage and increases the yield. She said, zero tolerance to food wastage is a must in the country.<br/><br/>A three day Mega Food event concluded today with India setting a Guinness world record by cooking 918 kg khichdi, a traditional multi-grain dish. The event was aimed at transforming the food economy and realizing the vision of doubling of farmers' income by establishing India as a preferred investment destination and sourcing hub. <br/><br/>This was the first time that India hosted such an event for the food processing sector to strengthen its position as a global food factory. Around two thousand participants from 30 countries, nearly 50 global CEOs and representatives of all state governments participated in the event. Chef Sanjeev Kapoor showcased Indian and foreign cuisines using Indian ingredients, flavours and fragrances to celebrate India's rich cultural heritage. <br/><br/>Inaugurating the event on Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi invited foreign investors to be a part of India's exciting growth journey in food processing sector. Several Union Ministers including Arun Jaitley, Radha Mohan Singh, Harsimrat Kaur Badal, Nitin Gadkari and Piyush Goyal also addressed the event on different themes. Our correspondent reports that India is expected to attract an investment of 10 billion dollar in food processing sector and generate 10 lakh jobs in the next 3 years.
