President calls for improvement in quality of research

The President Mr. Pranab Mukherjee called upon Indian universities to review their policy to bring about improvement in the quality of research. He said, despite its achievements in education sector, India lags behind countries like China and the United States, when it comes to research and innovation and there is a need to upgrade the standard of the higher education in the country. Mr. Mukherjee was addressing the 4th convocation of Dev Sanskriti University in Haridwar on Sunday. He said, the total number of patents filed by Indians in 2010 was around 6,000 compared to over 3 lakh by Chinese, around 1.7 lakh by Germans, 4.64 lakh by Japanese, and 4.2 lakh by Americans. The President said, the number of applications for patent filed by Indians comprised only 0.30 per cent of the total applications filed in the world.

Uttarakhand Governor, Dr. Aziz Qureshi, Chief Minister, Vijay Bahuguna and Vice Chancellor of the University, Pranav Pandya were present on the occasion.
