The President Mrs Pratibha Devisingh Patil has stressed the need for a second Green Revolution that maximizes productivity and generates income and employment opportunities for the rural population. Inaugurating a seminar in New Delhi, Mrs Patil said the outcomes of first green revolution need to be boosted. She said, while the food production of the country has grown, there should be concerted focus on rain fed agriculture to tap its potential. Mrs Patil said the nation is committed to a new deal to rural India through the revival of agriculture and all stakeholders have a role to play in this mission.Speaking at the seminar, Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar said, in recent years, the country has witnessed a renewed focus on agriculture. He said major programmes such as the National Horticulture Mission, the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana and the National Food Security Mission have been launched. Mr Pawar said the plan outlay for the agriculture and allied sectors has increased 156 per cent, that is, from 7,431 crore rupees in 2006-07 to over 19,000 crore rupees in 2010-11. He said these initiatives seek to enhance both production and productivity by encouraging high yielding varieties and hybrid seeds and quality planting material, efficient farm equipment, micro and minor irrigation and improving agricultural infrastructure.
