President Barack Obama has been re-elected to a second term, defeating Republican challenger Mitt Romney. With most US states reporting results, Mr. Obama has won a majority of electoral votes.
He prevailed despite lingering dissatisfaction with the economy and a well-funded challenger in Mr Romney, a former governor of Massachusetts.
With many states still reporting results, Mr Obama's margin of victory was not yet certain.
World leaders have begun congratulating President Obama on his victory. The British Prime Minister David Cameron said he was looking forward to working again with his friend in the White House.
