President Pranab Mukherjee has unveiled the photographs of Presidents of Central Legislative Assembly and portraits of former Speakers in the outer lobby of Lok Sabha chamber of Parliament today. The portraits of 14 Speakers including that of G.V. Mavalankar, N. Sanjiva Reddy and Somnath Chatterjee were unveiled at an impressive ceremony.
Speaking on the occasion, the President asked all political parties and leaders to follow the parliamentary norms. Terming Parliament as Gangotri of democracy, he said adherence to Constitutional principles must be top priority.
He added that people's faith in the democratic institutions depend greatly on the way the Speaker conducts the proceedings of the House which requires the Presiding Officers to rise above political considerations.
Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar said the contribution of the Presidents of Central Legislative Assembly and former Speakers of Lok Sabha has been immense in enriching parliamentary democracy. Vice President Mohd. Hamid Ansari, Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and several other dignitaries were present on the occasion.
