President Pranab Mukherjee arrived on a three-day state visit to the Republic of Mauritius Monday evening. At Port Louis, he was received and warmly greeted by Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam, Prime Minister of Mauritius.
The President was accorded a ceremonial reception. As the national anthems of both countries played at the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport, President Pranab Mukherjee inspected a guard of honour.
Today in Mauritius, the President meets with Rajkeswur Purryag, President of the Republic of Mauritius. A banquet will also be hosted for President Mukherjee by the Prime Minister of Mauritius, Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam.
The unique and special relationship which India shares with Mauritius will be further cemented during President Pranab Mukherjee’s three-day state visit.
The highlight of this visit would be Mr. Mukherjee being chief guest at the 45th Independence Day celebration of Mauritius on Tuesday. Agreements are expected to be signed in the field of health and social sector.
The other highlight would be the sentimental journey to the aapravasi ghat, where Indian labourers landed centuries ago.
It is there descendent that constitute nearly 70 per cent of the population of Mauritius.
The President’s visit to Ganga Talao would be another emotional visit as this lake is regarded as the Holy Ganges by those who trace their roots to India.
Another high point of this visit would be the conferring of the honorary degree of Doctor of Law on President Mukherjee by the University of Mauritius.
