Prasar Bharti has shut down over one thousand 200 Doordarshan Analogue Terrestrial Transmitters in view of the emerging trends in the Broadcasting sector and availability of DD Free Dish in the country. This was stated by Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha today. He said, the Analogue Terrestrial TV transmitters of Doordarshan carrying only one channel have lost their relevance and have become obsolete.
''
''He added that DD Free Dish, a free-to-air Direct to Home Service of Prasar Bharati carries more than 150 TV channels including 51 educational channels free of cost without any monthly subscription. The Minister clarified that employees are not likely to be affected by this decision as re-skilling and redeployment of staff from these installations is done on a need basis. He added that rationalization of obsolete terrestrial transmitters has no bearing on content generation by the AIR and DD Kendras.
