Pranab Mukherjee has launched his campaign for Presidential election by meeting UPA's key partner and DMK President M.Karunanidhi in Chennai. The meeting took place at the residence of Karunanidhi on Saturday.
Mukherjee, who enjoys a close rapport with Karunanidhi having been the emissary of Congress Chief Sonia Gandhi on many occasions, said it was natural to start the campaign from Chennai as DMK was a stable partner of UPA.
His meeting came ahead of his meeting with MPs and MLAs of Congress and other UPA allies to enlist their support.
Mukherjee, who is pitted against former Lok Sabha Speaker P A Sangma, said that apart from UPA, Samajwadi Party, BSP, CPI(M), Forward Bloc, JD(U) and Shiv Sena have extended their support to his candidature.
Apparently aiming at wooing West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, he said he is also seeking the support of those political parties who have not yet declared their choice for the Presidential election.
The other Presidential candidate and former Lok Sabha Speaker Purno A Sangma said he banks on “vote by conscience” for his race to the top constitutional post of the country. He said in Guwahati that ultimately at the end of the race all will be surprised by the vote which he will get.
