The Finance Minister, Mr. Pranab Mukherjee has expressed concern over the inflationary pressure on food prices. Talking to reporters in New Delhi today after the Wholesale Price Index, WPI, for the month of August was released, Mr. Mukherjee said, Reserve Bank of India is constantly monitoring the situation and the government is in touch with the apex bank. The Finance Minister asserted that the RBI and the Ministry of Finance will take appropriate measures to deal with the situation. As per the new WPI based on the 2004-05 prices, the inflation is at 8.51 per cent. As per the old series, the WPI inflation stood at 9.5 per cent in the same month. The new series released by the Commerce Minister, Mr. Anand Sharma in New Delhi says, that food articles became 14.64 per cent dearer in last month while prices of non-food articles including oil seeds soared by 16.04 per cent.
