Prakash Karat has been re-elected as the General Secretary of CPI(M). A 15-member politburo has been formed. CITU President A.K. Padmanabhan, former Kerala Minister for Education, Mr. M.A. Baby are the new faces in the politburo. An 89-member Central Committee has also been elected. Two posts have been kept vacant.

The decision was announced by Mr. Karat at the 20th party congress of the party at Kozhikode in Kerala. The six-day congress of the party will conclude this evening.

Mr. Karat said that the fight against the reported neo-liberal policies of the UPA Government at the Centre will continue. Mr.Karat said that the CPI (M) will continue its fight against both the Congress and the BJP at the Centre.
