Prajarajyam Party merges with Congress

Praja Rajyam Party headed by Telugu film Star Chiranjeevi today merged with Congress. PRP President Chiranjeevi announced this in New Delhi in the presence of Andhra Pradesh State Congress affairs in-charge Veerappa Moily. Prior to that Chiranjeevi along with his senior party leaders called on Congress President Sonia Gandhi and held discussions. Speaking to reporters later, Chiranjeevi said Congress party would be a greater forum to work for Social Justice and after detailed discussions with Congress high command, he decided to merge the Party in Congress. He said merger would benefit both sides in the state.Mr. Veerappa Moily said Chiranjeevi would be a strong leader of Congress party in the state. He said PRP ideals are closer to that of Congress policies and both sides would be benefitted with the merger.Though the discussions for cooperation between the two parties were underway for the past 6 months, the issue of merger has been making rounds in the political circles following Defence Minister A K Antony visited Chiranjeevi recently to invite him for discussions with Congress high command. The Film Actor founded the regional party in August 2008 just a year before the general elections and won 18 seats in the State Assembly. The PRP has 18 MLAs in the 294-member state Assembly. While Congress' strength is 155.
