Powerful storm Earl to hit east cost of USA today

The most powerful storm so far of the Atlantic hurricane season is expected to pass close to the east cost of the United States within the next few hours. The upper edge of hurricane Earl with winds of upto 175 kilometres an hour is due to hit the state of North Carolina and is expected to cause a storm surge at the same time as high tide. Reports say that huge waves are already pounding the coast.
