Powerful quake, tsunami in Pacific kills 28

A tsunami caused by a powerful earthquake in the South Pacific has killed at least 28 people and left dozens missing in Samoa and American Samoa.US emergency relief officials have rushed to the islands to respond to the tsunami. Initial reports said at least 14 people had been killed on the American territory and at least another 14 on independent Samoa, which is part of the same island chain. An 8.3-magnitude quake struck at 1748 GMT, generating 5.1ft waves in Apia and Pago Pago, American Samoa.The National Park Service facilities at Pago Pago in American Samoa have been destroyed completely. According to the superintendent of the National Park four tsunami waves 15 to 20 feet high roared ashore reaching up to 1.6 kilometre inland. Eni Faleomavaega, American Samoa's delegate to the US Congress said that he had been in touch with local officials with the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration as well as the Federal Emergency Management Agency assessing the area's disaster relief needs. He confirmed that early reports of thousands left homeless and some 20 dead. A Pacific tsunami warning was issued, but it has now been cancelled. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said the quake struck at a depth of 33km some 190km from Apia.
