A powerful earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Richter Scale struck deepunder the sea in eastern Indonesia today, causing panic and sending residents running out of their homes. There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties. Officials at the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said the quake struck at a depth of 86 miles and was too far below the earth's surface to cause a tsunami. An official with Indonesia's Meteorology and Geophysics Agency in Saumlaki said the epicentre was about 1,700 miles east of the capital, Jakarta.
