A powerful earthquake shook southern Chile today. The US Geological Survey puts the quake's magnitude at 7.7 on richter scale and centered about 40 kilometers southwest of Puerto Quellon and at a depth of 33 kilometers.<br/><br/>Chile's national emergency office has issued an alert and ordered the evacuation of coastal areas of Los Lagos region. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said hazardous waves of up to 3 metres above tide level were possible on coasts located up to 1,000 km from the quake's epicentre.
