In Assam, a powerful bomb planted by suspected militants exploded at a railway bridge at Lower Halflong in North Cachar Hill district on Tuesday. The bomb went off at a time when a goods train was proceeding to Badarpur from Lumding. Railway sources said the engine of the train was derailed following the impact of the explosion. There was, however, no casualty. No major damage to the railway bridge or the track has been reported. Meanwhile, a powerful improvised explosive device (IED) was recovered at Palashbari in Kamrup district on Tuesday afternoon. Later, security forces defused the IED. AIR Correspondent reports that security has been beefed up across the State in view of a boycott call of Republic Day celebrations by as many as six banned organizations, including outlawed ULFA on Wednesday.
