Power tariff to go up by about one rupee per unit

Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde has said that power tariff would go up by about one rupee per unit owing to the government's decision to hike gas prices on Wednesday evening. He said this while talking to reporters on the sidelines of a FICCI event in New Delhi today. Power tariff is regulated by the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC). On wednesday, the government had raised natural gas prices by more than double at 4.20 dollars per unit.The Cabinet also hiked the price of gas sold to power,fertilizer and city gas projects from 3,200 rupees per thousandcubic meters to 6,818 rupees per thousand cubic meters. The new gas rate would result in 2.75 per cent increasein power tariff on an overall basis, and up to 20 per centhike in the price of compressed natural gas (CNG) forautomobiles. CNG currently costs 21.90 rupees per kg in Delhi.
