The Power Minister Veerappa Moily today said that power supply has been restored completely as the Grid is functioning normally now. Speaking to mediapersons at his first press conference in the capital after assuming charge of the Power Ministry, Mr.Moily assured the nation that there will be no further grid failures of this kind as all necessary measures to check this situation, like increasing congestion charges and curbing overdraws will be taken by the government.
At least 20 states were plunged into darkness after three electricity grids- the Northern, Eastern and the North-Eastern grid- collapsed yesterday, affecting 60 crore people. The power crisis was the second in two days.
The Minister said that maintaining grid discipline at all costs is vital for everybody and thus requires the co-operation of all state governments. A meeting of state chief secretaries and power secretaries has been called on the 6th of this month in the capital to discuss grid parity followed by a meeting of the Chief Ministers.
Meanwhile, the Power Secretary P.Umashankar said that the committee set up to inquire into the cause of the grid failure met today. It is set to submit its report along with recommendations to avoid recurrence of such events in two weeks' time.
