The government has said there is a sharp increase of 8.4 per cent in electricity generation, which is the highest in last 20 years. Briefing media in New Delhi this afternoon, Power and Coal Minister Piyush Goyal said, the country has added 22, 566 mega watt of generation capacity in the last one year. The Minister attributed the performance of power sector to record coal production in the country.Saying that coal production has grown by around 12 per cent, Mr Goyal said the target is to increase coal production to 100 crore tonnes by 2020.Replying to a question on the rted shortage of power in the states, the Minister said, power deficit states can purchase power from the Centre and also coal for their power plants. He said, his Ministry has written to the states in this regard.On the possible hike in power tariff in Delhi, Mr Goyal said, Delhi government can at the best reply to it. He said, the Centre had invited Delhi government to participate in the bidding for gas allocation but due to their pre-occupation with internal issues, nobody came forward from the city government.Mr Goyal said his Ministry is committed to eradicate corruption with 3.35 lakh crore rupees of potential revenue going to coal bearing states, especially in eastern India.The Minister said the government is committed to ensure 24 x 7 power supply in the next five years. He said electricity will be made available to the 28 crore people who do not have access now. He said the government's objective is to make LED lights available to every household to reduce peak load. He said price of LED bulb has come down from 310 rupees last year to 82 rupees this year. Mr Goyal said power deficit has been reduced to lowest ever of 3.6 per cent.The Minister released e-book titled 'Ujjwal Bharat' of the Ministries of Power, Coal and New and Renewable Energy. A unified website of the Ministries was also launched.
