Power failure in Chile has caused blackouts

A power failure in Chile has caused blackouts throughout the country. The capital Santiago is one of the many cities plunged into darkness.

It comes just weeks after Chile was hit by a powerful earthquake. Reports say that the metro service in Santiago ground to a halt and thousands of people were evacuated.

The operators of the electricity grid said the blackout was caused by the failure of a high voltage transformer, some 700 kilometers south of the capital. The cause of the failure was not immediately known.
