A power failure in Chile has caused blackouts throughout the country. The capital Santiago is one of the many cities plunged into darkness. <br/><br/>It comes just weeks after Chile was hit by a powerful earthquake. Reports say that the metro service in Santiago ground to a halt and thousands of people were evacuated. <br/><br/>The operators of the electricity grid said the blackout was caused by the failure of a high voltage transformer, some 700 kilometers south of the capital. The cause of the failure was not immediately known.<br/>
