The Postal Department will set up a Post Bank of India to provide financial facilities, particularly to persons in the rural areas. In an interview to All India Radio in New Delhi, Secretary Department of Post Radhika Duraiswamy said that in this connection an outline in consultation with the concerned Ministries is being prepared. She said the Post Bank concept is already existing in many countries of the world.Duraiswamy said, the Department of Post is working as the Registrar of UID. There are near about 5000 identified post offices in the country, where people can go for their UID numbers. She said the Kolkata office is also sending UID data to people by speed post. The Secretary said that the postal department has opened about 5000 accounts of NAREGA workers and more than 50 per cent of wages is being distributed through post offices in the country. She said that, under the New Pension Scheme, workers of unorganised sectors can open their accounts in post offices.
