Port city of Kochi in Kerala put on high Security alert

In Kerala, the police have stepped up security measures in Kochi following intelligence reports of a possible terror strike by Lashkar-e-Taiba militants in the city in the next few days. The city has been put on high alert and security measures have been tightened at all strategic locations.Commandos have been posted at the Jewish Synagogue at Mattancherry, the oldest place of worship of the Jewish community in the Commonwealth region, and St Francis church at Fort Kochi. A Quick Reaction Team of Kerala police are among those manning the two heritage sites. Police said sea patrolling has been intensified and vehicles are also being checked.Security has also been stepped up at Kochi airport and High Court premises as also at two Hotels of the Taj group.Kochi Police Commissioner Manoj Abraham convened a meeting of officials of Cochin Port, Cochin Shipyard, Navy, Coast Guard, Central Industrial Security Force and five star hotels today and asked them to highten security.Kochi houses various important installations, including Southern Naval command and Cochin Shipyard Ltd. Union Home Secretary G K Pillai had yesterday informed the Kochi Police Commissioner and asked him to beef up security in and around the city.AIR correspondent reports, the Police are checking vehicles at all entry points to the city and are keeping a close watch on lodges, airport, railway stations and bus stands. Coastal security has also been beefed up in coordination with the Navy and the Coast Guard. The attack plan came to light following the interrogation of one of the activist Salman Ahmed of Indian Mujahideen, who was arrested in UP recently.
