Pope orders reform after abuse scandal

Pope Benedict says, he has set in motion a series of thorough reforms in a powerful conservative religious order whose founder sexually abused children for decades. The Vatican has described the actions of the Mexican cleric, Marcial Maciel, as immoral and criminal, and says his order, the Legionnaires of Christ, will have to be purified. The order enjoyed strong support from the Pope's predecessor, John Paul II. A statement said Father Maciel's conduct "had consequences in the life and the structure of the Legion that are so serious as to require a journey of profound restructuring". Pope Benedict XVI will name an interim leader within weeks, said Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi. The decision is a major shake-up at a time when the Church faces intense pressure to crack down on abusers and their protectors in the hierarchy.<br/>
