Pope Francis calls for urgent respect for ceasefire accord in Yemen

Pope Francis has called for urgent respect for a ceasefire accord in Yemen to allow humanitarian aid through in the conflict-weary country.
''
'' Speaking before embarking on a historic three-day visit to the UAE, the Pope appealed to all parties concerned and to the international community to implement the agreement reached in Sweden last year to ensure the distribution of food and to work for the good of the population.
''
'' He added that he is closely following the humanitarian crisis in Yemen with great concern.
''
'' Meanwhile, the warring sides of the Yemen conflict met today in a UN-led push to implement a stalled troop withdrawal from Yemen's main port of Hodeidah. The conflicting parties were meant to withdraw their forces from Hodeidah by January 7.
''
'' However, they have failed to do so as the Iranian-aligned Houthi rebels and the Saudi-backed government disagree on who should control the city and ports.
''
'' Almost 80 per cent of the country's commercial goods, aid and fuel flows through the Hodeidah port, making it arguably the most important city in Yemen. According to the UN, the conflict has put millions of people at the risk of starvation.
