Polling underway peacefully for third & final phase of Nepal local polls

Polling for third and final phase of local elections in Nepal is underway peacefully. More than twenty six lakh voters are expected to exercise their franchise to elect 136 local bodies in province 2. AIR correspondent reports that 35 percent voting has been recorded till 12 noon.<br/><br/>People actively participating in one of the most important event of democracy in Nepal. Male and female voters from all age groups turning out in a large number to cast their votes. In Saralhi district 116 years old Bhairava Bahadur Damai casted his vote. Similarly 116 years old Sarvasiya Devi Yadav also exercised her franchise in Mahotari district. <br/><br/>More than 37000 candidates are in fray for 6627 posts in 8 districts. With rest of the Nepal people of Tarai will now also have their elected representatives. Local elections in Nepal are being held after a gap of 20 years. Earlier polling for first and second round was held on May 14 and June 28.

Polling for third and final phase of local elections in Nepal is underway peacefully. 35 percent voting has been recorded in 8 districts of province 2 till 12 noon. More than twenty six lakh voters are expected to exercise their franchise to elect 136 local bodies. <br/><br/>AIR correspondent reports that voters in Tarai are enthusiastically taking part in the local elections being held after a gap of 20 years. Over 37,000 candidates are trying their luck for 6,627 posts of local representatives. <br/><br/>Elaborate security arrangements have been made for free, fair and peaceful elections. Completion of local elections will be an important step towards strengthening democracy in Nepal. As per the new constitution, local, province and parliament elections need to be completed by 21st January 2018.
