Polling is underway in Nagaland and Meghalaya for assembly elections. The polling begins for both the assemblies at 7.00 a.m. People are seen standing in front of the polling booths to cast their votes.
In Nagaland, an electorate of 11 lakh 71 thousand 389 voters comprising of 5 lakh 89 thousand 553 females will exercise their franchise in Nagaland today. Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has reportedly cast his ballot in the initial hours from Touphema of Northern Angami II constituency.
In Nagaland, the fate of 188 candidates will be decided in the polls. All arrangements have been completed in the state for the elections. 2023 polling booths have been set up and a total of 50 thousand polling officials are deployed for the election. Over 30 thousand security personnels are being deployed for the smooth conduct of the polls. Around 12 lakh electorates are eligible to exercise their franchise today.
In, Meghalya, 345 candidates, including Chief Minister Mukul Sangma and Congress president D D Lapang, are in the fray for the 60-member Assembly. Of the 2,845 polling stations, 900 have been declared 'hyper-sensitive'. Booths along the international border and the interstate border with Assam have also been categorised as 'hyper-sensitive'. The BSF has deployed 10,000 personnel.
