Polling underway for final phase of assembly elections in Assam

In Assam, 25 to 30 per cent electorates cast their votes in the first four hours of polling for 64 Assembly segments spread over 14 districts. The Additional Chief Electoral Officer of the State Mr. Mukesh Sahu told AIR Guwahati Correspondent that barring few minor incidents in two voting centres at Rangiya and Morigaon, polling was so far by and large peaceful. Polling began in 12,589 voting centres amidst tight security at seven this morning and it will close at three this afternoon.In today’s second and final phase of elections, over 96 lakh voters will decide the electoral fortune of 496 candidates, including 47 women. Political stalwarts whose electoral fortune will be sealed in EVMs include nine sitting Ministers, two former Chief Ministers- Mr. Prafulla Kumar Mahanta and Dr. Bhumidhar Barman besides the president of main opposition party the Asom Gana Parishad Mr.Chandra Mohan Patowary.The ruling Congress has put up candidates in all the 64 constituencies. BJP and Asom Gana Parishad are contesting 58 and 53 seats respectively. AIUDF and Bodoland Peoples Front have also fielded their candidates in 59 and 26 seats respectively. There are altogether 110 Independents in the fray.Over sixty thousand jawans of Central paramilitary forces have been deployed in the sensitive locations for trouble free polls. A strict vigil is being maintained along the borders with Bhutan and Bangladesh to check infiltration of anti-social elements.
