Polling underway for final phase of assembly elections in Assam

In Assam, around 10 to 15 per cent electorates cast their votes in the first two hours of polling for 64 Assembly segments spread over 14 districts. Polling began in 12,589 voting centres amidst tight security at seven on Monday morning. Voting will come to an end at three P.M. The Additional Chief Electoral Officer of the State, Mr. Mukesh Sahu told AIR Guwahati Correspondent that the polling was so far peaceful. In today’s second and final phase of elections, around 96 lakh voters will decide the electoral fortune of 496 candidates, including 47 women. Political stalwarts whose electoral fortune will be sealed in EVMs include nine sitting Ministers, two former Chief Ministers- Mr. Prafulla Kumar Mahanta and Dr. Bhumidhar Barman besides the president of main opposition party the Asom Gana Parishad Mr. Chandra Mohan Patowary. Over sixty thousand jawans of Central paramilitary forces have been deployed in the sensitive locations for trouble free polls. A strict vigil is being maintained along the borders with Bhutan and Bangladesh to check infiltration of anti-social elements.
