Polling is in progress for the fourth phase of Lok Sabha elections in seven Constituencies spread over four states and all the 32 Assembly segments in Sikkim. The Lok Sabha Constituencies are three in Assam, both seats in Goa, the lone seat in Sikkim and the remaining one seat in Tripura. Elaborate security arrangements have been made to ensure peaceful polling.
In Assam, peaceful voting is on for Silchar, Karimganj and Autonomous district seats amidst tight security. Chief Electoral Officer of Assam Vijayendra said that over 12 percent voting has been reported during first two hours. He said that 10 EVMs have been replaced due to technical errors. People in large numbers including first time voters, leaving the comforts of home, are queuing up to cast their votes. Polling will come to an end at 5pm. In Karbi Anglong, pro-talk insurgent cadres are also exercising their voting rights. 418 micro – observers have been deployed in this phase at vulnerable booths. Central para-military forces have also been deployed at 803 polling booths. A total of 37 candidates are in fray in this phase. Congress, Asom Gana Parishad, BJP, AIUDF, Trinmool Congress, CPI(M), Aam Aadmi Party , CPI-ML, SUCI ,among others, are in the fray.
In Goa, heavy voting is on in both the two Parliamentary constituencies. Up to 10 am more than 28 per cent voting was recorded in North Goa and 26.5 per cent in South Goa. North Goa BJP candidate and former Union minister Shripad Naik cast his vote in Sapendra voting centre in Old Goa while south Goa Congress candidate Alex Reginald Lorence inked in Kudchade Batora in the early hours.
Over 20 percent polling has been reported in 1st three hours in Tripura East constituency. Sikkim recorded brisk polling for the lone Lok Sabha seats and the 32-member Assembly.
