Polling in Maharashtra, Haryana, Arunachal ends

Polling for assembly elections in Maharashtra, Haryana and Arunachal Pradesh has ended. Moderate to heavy polling was reported in the three states amidst stray incidents of violence. While an estimated 72 percent voters exercised their franchise in Arunachal Pradesh, the turnout was around 50 percent in Haryana and 40 per cent in Maharashtra when reports last came in.<br/>In Arunachal Pradesh, polling for 57 of the 60 Assembly seats ended peacefully at three pm. The state election department said the final percentage would be available when reports from remote areas reach the state capital. The percentage in the 2004 assembly elections had been 67.83. Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu and two other Congress candidates have been elected unopposed from the three seats in Tawang district.<br/>In Maharashtra, according to latest reports over 40 percentage polling was held. The polling which began on a dull note, later picked up. In the naxal infested Gadchiroli district, naxalite opened fire at a petrol party near Kasansur in Aheri block shortly before the polling commenced. Police said no one was injured in the incident.<br/>In another incident, naxal opened fire at a polling station at Bonde in Korchi taluka of the district. While no one was hurt, additional forces were dispatched by an air force chopper. Over 1.29 lakh state police and central forces were deployed across the state to ensure orderly polling in 288 assembly seats. DGP (Election) A.N.Roy said that the incidents did not hamper the polling process.<br/><br/>Bollywood celebrities including Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Priyanka Chopra and Gulzar turned out in full force to vote in the Maharashtra Assembly polls .<br/>The stars that also included Aamir Khan, Sanjay Dutt and John Abraham came out in droves to wait in queue patiently for their turn to vote.<br/><br/>In Haryana, over 50 percent electorate cast their votes. The Chief Electoral officer Mr. Sajjan Singh said a group clashed an some firing incidents took place in Nemkhera village in Mewat district, but this was not near to the polling booth. A polling agent of an independent candidate died outside the polling station after a clash with a rival at Hemu Mazra villae in the Ghulla constituency of Kaithal district this morning.<br/><br/>
