Poll campaigns for coming Assembly elections are gearing up in four States and one Union Territory. In Tamil Nadu, as many as 1,153 nominations were rejected by the returning officers across the State for various reasons during scrutiny of papers on Monday.AIR correspondent says that the top leaders have switched constituencies in this election.For reasons best known to them, the top leaders in the state have decided to test their electoral fortunes from new constituencies. For the DMK President M Karunanidhi and AIADMK Chief Jayalalitha, it is back to their roots. Chief Minister M Karunanidhi who has never lost an election right since 1957 is contesting from Tiruvarur, trying his luck from his birth place for the first time. Similarly the AIADMK Chief has switched to Srirangam from rural Andipatti. Ms. Jayalalitha's family stayed in Srirangam before migrating to Mysore. It is for the first time the chief ministerial candidates are fighting from central Tamil Nadu. Following the footsteps of his father, Deputy Chief Minister M K Stalin is also seeking election from a new segment- Kolathur in Chennai. The final list of candidates will be known on Wednesday, the last day for withdrawal of nominations. For next month's Assembly poll in Kerala, 1185 nomination papers have been found to be in order by the Election Commission. Wednesday is the last day for withdrawal of nomination papers for the April 13th poll. AIR correspondent reports that all the major parties have further stepped up campaigning in the state.” In Assam, poll campaign is gaining momentum in Barak valley with senior leaders of major political parties visiting the area. Senior Congress leader Pranab Mukherjee is to address election meeting in Silchar area today and will move to Upper Assam on Wednesday. BJP leader Sushma Swaraj is also visiting the Bengali dominated valley today. In West Bengal, the Election Commission transferred one District Magistrate and three senior Police Officers in West Bengal ahead of assembly elections in the State.In Puducherry, the returning officers accepted a total of 234 nominations when the papers were scrutinized on Monday. The Election department in a statement said, 86 nominations were rejected on various grounds.Meanwhile, the ruling Congress has agreed to allocate two Assembly seats and a nominated MLA post to the Pattali Makkal Katchi, as part of its seat-sharing agreement for elections to the 30-member Legislative Assembly.Puducherry Congress Committee President Mr. A.V.Subramanium said, the parties are yet to enter into a written agreement and the approval of the party high command is awaited.
