Poll campaign in Assam ends today

Campaigning for the first phase of Assembly elections in Assam will end today. Sixty two constituencies spread over 13 districts of Upper Assam, Barak Valley and two hill districts will go to the polls in this phase on Monday. The Election Commission has approved 22 alternative documents for identification of voters in the absence of photo identity cards. In West Bengal, notification for the 3rd phase of Assembly elections has been issued. Seventy five constituencies spread over North and South 24 Parganas districts and Kolkata will go to polls in this phase on the 27th of this month. Filing of nominations for 2nd phase of the elections continues in the state. The scrutiny of nomination papers for first phase poll will take place today. In Tamil Nadu, campaigning has gained momentum as the April 13 Assembly elections are approaching fast. In the northern districts of the state where many ministers and sitting members are contesting, the Vijaykant led DMDK is trying to make inroads this time. AIR correspondent reports that two issues of drinking water and better irrigation facilities are the main issues voters want the political parties to attend to.
