In Assam, campaigning for the first phase of polls in 62 Assembly segments will conclude at 3.00 this afternoon. Polling for these constituencies will be held from 7.00 a.m. to 3.00 p.m. on Monday. Altogether 485 candidates, including 38 women, are in the fray. Eighty five lakh nine thousand and eleven electorates are eligible to vote in 11,264 polling centres spread over 13 districts comprising Upper Assam, Barak Valley and two hill districts.Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh is scheduled to address two election rallies at Dhakuakhana and Rupahihaat in Lakhimpur and Nagaon districts today.Meanwhile, the banned outfit ULFA, led by Paresh Baruah group has called a 12-hour state-wide bandh in protest against the Prime Minister’s visit from 6.00 this morning. Reports reaching Guwahati said normal life has been affected all over the state in view of the bandh call.Shops, markets, banking and educational institutions remained closed. Private vehicles are also off the road. Train and airlines services are, however, not affected. Security has been beefed up across the state.Meanwhile, in West Bengal, notification for the 3rd phase of Assembly elections has been issued. Seventy five constituencies spread over North and South 24 Parganas districts and Kolkata will go to polls in this phase on the 27th of this month.Filing of nominations for 2nd phase of the elections continues in the state. The scrutiny of nomination papers for first phase poll will take place today.In Tamil Nadu, campaigning has gained momentum as the April 13 Assembly elections are approaching fast. In the northern districts of the state where many ministers and sitting members are contesting, the Vijaykant led DMDK is trying to make inroads this time. AIR correspondent reports that two issues of drinking water and better irrigation facilities are the main issues voters want the political parties to attend to.
