A group of prominent politicians including several former Heads of State have strongly criticised anti-drugs policy around the world. A report by the Global Commission on Drug Policy says the war on illegal drugs has failed causing thousands of deaths and benefiting organised crime. In a damning indictment, some world leaders including former Presidents of Mexico and Colombia, most affected by illegal drugs, say, urgent changes are overdue. The report says the current policy to tackle drug abuse and the crimes based on it are clearly not working. The result is thousands of deaths and rampant lawlessness. It calls for an end to criminalisation, marginalisation and stigmatisation of people who use drugs but do not harm others.
