Political parties are divided on Women's Reservation Bill issue

Political parties are divided on the issue of Women's Reservation Bill which is scheduled to come up in the Rajya Sabha on International Women's Day on Monday. While the pro women reservation political parties are keen to see an early passage of the Bill providing 33 per cent reservation to them in the Lok Sabha and State Assembalies, the political parties opposing the bill are in no mood to relent.<br/><br/>Expressing commitment for early passage of the bill, Congress President Mrs Sonia Gandhi, described the Bill as one of the most important legislations. This information was given by party spokesman Abhishek Singhvi after CPP meeting.<br/><br/>The BJP senior party leader Venkaiyah Naidu said that the BJP has already provided reservation to women in the party.<br/><br/>RJD Chief Mr Lalu Prasad Yadav says there is no change in the party stand on the issue and demanded quota for scheduled and backward classes in the bill.<br/><br/>Speaking on the same lines, Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav said that the party will not allow the passage of the Bill. Rejecting the contentions of RJD and SP, Law Minister Mr Veerappa Moily said that any reservation for backward and scheduled classes within the Bill can be introduced only if a similar reservation is brought in general.<br/><br/>The Chairperson of Women's Commission Ms Girija Vyas described the move as an important step toward inclusion of women in decision making process.<br/><br/>Supporting the Bill, CPM leader Gurudas Dasgupta said that the party's stand on the bill remains the same.<br/><br/>Information and Broadcasting Minister Ms Ambika Soni today expressed hope for a speedy passage of the Women's Reservation Bill. Talking to reporters outside Parliament, Ms Soni said that the Bill should not be much delayed as the government's stand is clear. Supporting her version, BJP leader Nazma Heptullah said that her party and the Left were with the government on the Bill.<br/><br/>In a related development, a delegation of Women Congress MPs today thanked Congress President Mrs Sonia Gandhi for initiating the process for taking the Women Reservation Bill for discussion on 8th of this month.<br/><br/>AIR parliamentary Correspondent reports it will be interesting to watch how a two third majority is mustered in the two Houses for the passage of the Bill given the fact that both ruling and opposition alliances partners are divided on the issue.<br/>
