Political meeting on Gorkhaland issue this afternoon in capital

A political level meeting on the Gorkhaland issue will be held in the capital this afternoon. The Minister of State for Home Affairs Mr. Ajay Makan will represent the Centre at the talks. At the fourth round of tripartite talks, in December last year, it was agreed that the next round should be at the political level. Ahead of the talks the Gurkha Janmukti Morcha has proposed the setting up of a regional council till their demand for Gorkhaland state is agreed to. The GJM Chief Bimal Gurung who will be attending today's meeting has proposed the council to be called Gorkhaland regional authority which he said will only be an interim set up and a way forward for carving out of separate state of Gorkhaland. They also want legislative powers to be given to the authority. The West Bengal government is willing to give more autonomy to Darjeeling region but does not want a separate state to be carved out. Centre has maintained that a political consensus is yet to be arrived on the issue.
