Political crisis over separate Telangana intensifies in AP

In Andhra Pradesh, the political crisis over separate Telangana state issue has intensified with the number of MLAs tendered their resignation rising to 135. In all, 79 MLAs from Congress have resigned while 43 from TDP and 14 from Praja Rajyam Party in the 294 member Assembly. In view of the crisis, the state government is holding consultations with the attorney general even as the speaker sought legal advice. However, Speaker Kiran Kumar Reddy made it clear that he would speak each individual before taking a decision on those resignations. On the other hand, amidst a debate on whether to continue proceedings in the wake of situation where more than half of the members tendered their resignations, the assembly has been adjourned till Monday. <br/><br/>Meanwhile, Chief Minister Rosaiah told reporters that he has received no written instructions from the high command to pass a resolution in Assembly on Telangana issue. Stating that he was only informed that the process for carving out separate Telangana state should begin, he assured that the opinions of all stake holders would be taken into consideration before the final decision on Telangana. He further said there is no time frame for moving a resolution in the assembly and he was continuously updating the party high command over the developments in the state to find out a solution. Expressing concern over the demonstrations being held in Rayalaseema and Coastal regions protesting the centre's decision to carve out Telangana state, the Chief Minister appealed political parties and people to observe restraint. <br/><br/>On the other hand, the response to the bandh called by the supporters of unified state in Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalseema regions was total and barring sporadic incidents remained peaceful. Life in those regions has been paralysed as the state Road Transport Corporation APSRTC has suspended all its services in 13 districts. The educational institutions and business establishments remained closed. Demonstrations have been held at several places Coastal and Rayalseema regions protesting the centre's decision to initiate process to carve out Telangana State.<br/>Meanwhile, tensions prevailed at the High Court in Hdyerabad as two groups of lawyers clashed over the formation of a separate Telangana state today. One group opposed the division of the state, while lawyers from the other supported the formation of separate Telangana state that echoed the court premises with the slogans from both sides. Meanwhile, Telangana Rashtra Samithi President K.Chandrasekhara Rao has been discharged this morning from the Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences in Hyderabad.<br/><br/><br/>Meanwhile, the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh today assured the Members of the Parliament from Andhra Pradesh that the government will not take any action in haste on the Telangana issue. Twenty-five members of Parliament met Dr. Singh in the Parliament House today. Talking to reporters after the meeting, the Minister of State for Defence, Mr. M. Pallam Raju said that a consensus earlier seemed to be emerging on the formation of the proposed state but now some parties have changed their stand. <br/><br/>The Andhra members later met Finance Minister Mr. Pranab Mukherjee and discussed the issue. Highly placed party sources said after the meeting that a resolution may not be passed so soon in the Andhra Assembly for carving out the seperate state. A meeting of the core committee of the party is likely to be held next week after party president Mrs Sonia Gandhi comes back to Delhi. Sources said that the situation in the party remains in control and the resignations are only a reflection of members sentiment. <br/><br/>The BJP today alleged that centre has messed up the issue of creation of Telengana by making a announcement without proper consultation with all stakeholders. Talking to reporters outside the Parliament, BJP leader, Mr. Venkaiah Naidu said that the government has behaved in an irresponsible manner letting the situation slip from its hands. He alleged that the Congress-led Central Government did not share the details with its own party member including the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh.<br/><br/>While, the Home Secretary Mr. G K Pillai has clarified that he had not stated that Hyderabad would be the Capital of Telangana. According to the Home ministry clarification, in response to a question from a journalist that the proponents for the State of Telangana had wanted Hyderabad to be its Capital, Mr. Pillai had stated that this was what they wanted. The issue of the Capital for the proposed new State of Talengana for which steps have been initiated is a matter that is to be decided by consensus and by the Centre.
